Welcome to Donegal! (Ireland) - Day 1

Donegal Airport (Aerphort Dhun Na nGall) has been voted the most scenic airport in the world for the 3rd straight year. If I didn't know any better, that picture above looks like I just landed at an airport in the Caribbean! Ha! Add in clouds, rain, and gusting winds, you'll soon remember you are in Ireland, my friends. One of six regional airports in Ireland, this scenic little airstrip was where my Aer Lingus flight ultimately touched down. A 40-minute jaunt from Dublin, Ireland. Our approach, aboard this twin-prop puddle jumper, was made during a blustery rainy afternoon...so much for the warm weather and umbrella drinks!

Not surprising, Donegal Airport is the smallest airport I've ever flown into or out of. That includes a long list of tiny airports in Wyoming. Ted also agrees, having previously flown out of Laramie (see right). You wouldn't know it by looking at him, he is a world-class athlete. Ted has completed 99 marathons with at least one in every state in the U.S.

Ted is shaped like a pear and has the body of a couch potato, not who I think of when I hear 99 marathons. As we chatted he showed me a picture of all 99 medals in his collection. One for each completed marathon thus far. His favorite is the Alien Escape from Area 51, which is also run in the dark of night. His collection of medals might be more impressive than the feat itself, I'm not sure? He landed here with me on Thursday intending to complete his 100th - The Donegal Wild Atlantic Marathon on Sunday. The race starts at Killybegs and ends at Glencolumbkille, Ireland. You'll be hearing more about these two towns when I visit them over the next week. He was equally impressed when I shared my plans to walk 294 miles across Northern Ireland. Ted is an inspiration and a reminder that adventure doesn't care what shape you are in.

Proof that I am in Donegal County, Ireland.
