La Paz (Mexico) | Bussing Across the Desert - Day 5

Stepping out from the Aguila Bus Terminal in La Paz, Mexico, I am greeted with a fantastic view. It is, however, considerably windier here. La Paz has a well-developed, paved boardwalk stretching about 3.5 mi (5.6 km).

Today, I am not feeling great. Ever since breakfast, my stomach isn't feeling great. My breakfast over the last couple of days has been one of my favorites, Mexican Chorizo with eggs, refried beans, and fresh corn tortillas. I ought to have stuck with it this morning. Nevertheless, my stomach feels bloated and gassy.

Mexican Chorizo differs from Spanish Chorizo in a couple of ways. First, the Mexican variety is a fresh sausage, meaning it must be cooked within a few days of being prepared and seasoned. Spanish Chorizo is a cured sausage that is fully cooked and sometimes smoked. Spanish Chorizo is excellent in sandwiches or on charcuterie boards. While the Mexican variety is best enjoyed mixed into dishes, such as eggs, poultry, etc. Second, Mexican Chorizo gets its red color from chili powders added to the pork or beef, which can sometimes give it a spicy note. Spanish Chorizo gets its red coloring from paprika, which gives it a smoky flavor.

The Aguila bus ride was > 2 hrs from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz. Driving across the desert was easy. There was little traffic, and we followed the Pacific Coast for the first hour until we reached Todos Santos, a town I plan to visit later. The Aguila bus is a very modern AC-cooled enormous Volvo Bus, which made the drive easy despite the fact I am not feeling great.

La Paz is located in the Bay of La Paz, 200 km (126 mi) north of Cabo San Lucas. It is the largest city in Baja Sur (Southern Baja). Seafood dominates the local cuisine, which I am looking forward to experiencing. Cabo San Lucas was very enjoyable though it has a strong nightclub influence.

I am impressed with the boardwalk in La Paz, and the city has a nice relaxed feel. It follows the bay for a long way. It is wide (left), next to a cycle path protected from motor vehicles (right). So I wheel my tiny suitcase down the boardwalk the 1.5 km (0.9 mi) to my accommodations. Despite the warm weather, 72 F (22 C), the wind makes it quite cool, and I am looking forward to putting on another layer.

After getting settled, I noticed I still didn't feel great. Not really sick, just not great. I am frequently belching and feel tired. I made the mistake of lying down then I passed out. Haha. So when I woke up, it was much later than I expected.

Exploring La Paz will have to wait until tomorrow. For now, I need to get some food. Something easy on the stomach. So I find a sushi bar and order edamame, pineapple juice, and a tuna roll. It hits the spot and fills the gap.
